With temperatures set to drop as the colder part of the year slowly sneaks around the corner, your oven is about to get some action again.
While summer calls for lighter dishes and al-fresco dining, autumn and winter are truly the seasons for mouth-watering roasts, indulging pies and crumbly quiches. And let’s not forget about the sweet sugar-sprinkled baked pumpkin or roasted chestnuts – the all-time autumn favourites. The oven is bound to get busier.
To make sure your oven is ready for the season, and no autumn flavours are lost while cooking, now is the perfect time to give your oven a refreshing clean up.
HOW TO EASILY CLEAN THE OVEN?
- A pair of cleaning gloves
- Baking soda
- White vinegar
- Dish cloth
- Spray bottle for convenience
What to do?
Prepare the oven.
Get the oven ready for the big clean. Remove all parts such as oven racks, thermometer, and whatever else you store in the oven. Do not remove any of the oven parts, such as the fan, or heating elements. Set aside the elements you removed to clean them later.
Prepare the cleaning paste.
Mix half a cup of baking soda with enough water to create a reasonably thick, spreadable paste. Prepare your vinegar for later, by pouring it into the empty spray bottle.
Spread the paste.
Use the baking soda paste to generously coat your oven. Put more over greasier bits or where there is more grime. You should see the baking soda paste turn a pit brownish as it comes in contact with the grease.
Time to wait.
Let the paste sit overnight, or for at least 12 hours to work through the grime. Use the time to clean the parts that you took out of the oven earlier.
Wipe the oven.
After the 12 hours have passed use a damp dish cloth to wipe out as much of the soda paste as you can. Use the spatula for harder to reach places. For any baking soda residue spray some vinegar on top and let it foam before wiping with the cloth. Use more vinegar and water as needed, until the oven is all clean and shiny.
Put it all back together
Put the cleaned oven racks and trays back in the oven, make sure it’s all dry, and there is no baking soda residue and you’re done.
