The signs your boiler might need a service now

Your boiler should be serviced every year to maintain its efficiency and performance. Here are the signs a boiler service might be due.

Your boiler is one of the hardest working appliances in the house. Yet when it comes to maintenance and regular checks many of us just leave it till the last minute.

Just like your car, your boiler needs an annual service too, to ensure it's still healthy and efficient. More importantly, to keep this lovely 10 year warranty valid, you will need to service your boiler annually.

Even if your boiler has not had any issues so far, it might still be in need of a boiler service. Here are some signs you can look out for:

Reduced amount of hot water.

As we use hot water daily, probably the first sign of a malfunctioning boiler system you will notice is the reduced amount of hot water. Your hot water might also be running out faster than what you're used to. Unless someone in your house has started taking longer showers in the second bathroom, it's probably a boiler issue worth checking.

Radiators not heating up properly.

If your radiators are not heating up properly, or fast enough you might start turning them up without realising. This will impact your energy bills and cost you a significant amount in the long run. If you notice cold spots on the radiators, the first thing you can try is to bleed them. If that doesn't help, it's a good idea to contact an engineer for a service (and potential repair) than leave the issue lingering.

The blue flame has turned yellow.

If you're not sure your boiler is working properly, and you noticed the nice blue flame has turned into a dull yellow one, you will need to contact and engineer immediately. The same applies if you can see black (burnt) marks around the boiler, or its pilot light keeps switching off. These can all be signs of a gas leak, which could lead to a potentially fatal CO poisoning.

Finally, don't forget your boiler and heating system are very complex, so it's worth having a Gas Safe engineer check them regularly, especially before heavier use periods.
