Check for leaks and shut off faucets

Make sure to shut off all outdoor faucets from the inside and drain. Any water lines that won't be used in the winter months should be shut off to prevent freezing over. Any leaking or dripping faucets should also be repaired immediately.

Inspect your doors and windows

It's the best time of year to make sure that your doors and windows are sealed tight. Protect the interior of your home by inspecting the caulking around windows and door frames and repair or install any weather stripping. You should always replace any broken or cracked glass if you spot any.

Clear out the gutters

Dirt, leaves, and other build up in your gutters can cause problems to form in cold weather, so make sure to clear out your gutters on a regular basis.

Check for rot on any patios, porches and decks

Your porches, patios, and decks might not get too much use in the wintertime, but they still need maintenance attention. Talk to an expert about cleaning and sealing your wooden deck.

Have a look in the basement

The basement may one of the last things on your mind but now is a prime time to check for any leaks or cracks in the concrete walls of your basement. It is also important to clear out any dust from your laundry vents to avoid potential fire hazards.

Inspect your smoke and carbon monoxide detectors

Smoke detectors need new batteries about once every 12 months, so if you haven't changed the batteries yet this year, now is the time. Electricity-powered carbon monoxide detectors should be replaced every 5-7 years.

Look after your chimney

If you have a real fireplace in your home, this is also the time to have your chimney cleaned and inspected. Check for loose or deteriorated brick, moisture damage and cracks.

Get boiler breakdown cover with Rightio

Boiler breakdown cover from Rightio - from £19.50 a month - which offers unrivaled coverage for your boiler, especially handy during these winter months. Annual boiler cover gives you peace of mind that if your boiler does break, you are just one quick call away from enjoying hot water and heating again.

Don't forget the roof

Any time you're expecting seasonal weather, no matter the time of the year, it's wise to check your roof for signs of damage. Cut tree branches away from your roof surfaces and keep an eye on any loose or missing pieces, shingles, and vent pipes throughout the winter to avoid major leaks or ventilation problems.
