Use the right heating controls for your home and watch your bills go down this winter.

Using the right heating controls at your home will allow you to be comfortable and cosy, without affecting your energy bills. It is also environmentally friendly – you won’t waste as much fuel and heat and will reduce your carbon dioxide emissions.

Other benefits of using the right heating controls are purely for your own comfort – you will be able to schedule your heating and hot water as needed, and only heat the parts of the home you’re actually using.

Below are three types of heating controls you can consider:

Thermostatic valves (TRVs)

Thermostatic radiator valves can be the right heating controls for your house, if you want to have control over the heating in different rooms. TRVs work by reducing the flow of hot water coming through the radiator, when the temperature goes above a certain setting. You need to play with the levels a bit, until you find the perfect one but in general – the lower the setting, the less it will cost.

You need to keep in mind that radiator covers are not recommended when you’re using a TRV, as they sense the air temperature around them to control the water flow.

You should also never fit a thermostatic radiator valve in a room where there is a wall thermostat as they’ll be confusing each other.

Thermostatic valves can also be easily confused by draughts or covers (such as shelves above the radiator), making it allow or deny heated water to the radiators.

Room thermostats

Room thermostats keep you cosy but not too toasty by making sure your home doesn’t get warmer than necessary. They turn the heating on until your home reaches the desired temperature and then turn it off, until the temperature drops down. Therefore your room thermostat should be set to the lowest comfortable temperature.

Similar to thermostatic valves you’ll need to make sure that your room thermostat is not blocked by curtains or furniture, or close to a heat source, like your hobs.

Contrary to a popular belief, you don’t need to crank up the thermostat when it gets colder outside. Your room will still be heated to the comfortable, desired temperature but it might just take a bit longer.

Smart heating controls

Technology really is our friend when it comes to heating and saving on bills. With modern heating controls you can manage your home temperature from your tablet, phone or computer. Advanced devices can learn from your choices, and adjust the heating accordingly.

While smart heating controls won’t necessarily save you money, they will give you greater control than any other heating controller.
