Crunchy leaves, warm colours and cosy jumpers – autumn is the perfect season to dream and relax with a hot cuppa. But while the temperatures are still nice, there is something else you can also do – take some time to prepare your home for the colder weather.
Preparing your home for the autumn will simultaneously allow you to get ready for the upcoming winter as well, with many tasks being focused around transforming your house for the colder weather.
7 Home Maintenance Tips for the Autumn
Declutter in Time for the Winter
It might sound obvious but we end up collecting a lot of stuff over the summer, which we might not need in retrospect. That bag of seashells from the beach, the clothes you bought on sale but never wore, all the food you thought you’d need to survive the lockdown in March but it’s still filling your cupboards three months later – donate or throw away anything you won’t need for the next 6 months.
Clean the Gutters and Drains
You probably cleaned the gutters and drains after the spring but now is the time to do it again. Autumn means rain and falling leaves and you want to make sure your gutters and drains are prepared to handle the pressure. If you think your drains might need professional unblocking, Rightio can help.
Time to Service the Boiler
With boiler switch on at the start of October (and a not very warm summer overall) it is time to make sure your boiler is ready for the winter season. If you haven’t had your boiler service this year you want to have it now, to ensure your boiler is healthy and have enough time to remedy any potential issues. With ten years of experience under our belt, Rightio can guarantee your boiler will be in the hands of true professionals.
Check for Cracks and Holes in the Exterior
Cracks and holes in your exterior walls can let rainwater and draught in the house, which can cause structural damage, mould growth and increased energy bills as the heat is escaping. To prevent this from happening, use a bright and dry day to go around your house and check for cracks and changes holes. Take a picture of them, buy some gap filler and get to work!
Test Your Thermostat
Test and check that your thermostat is working correctly, increasing and lowering the temperature when needed. To keep your winter energy bills down you can set it at a lower temperature over the night when you’ll be cosied up under the duvet. If you don’t have a thermostat or you detect a problem our heating engineers can help.
Test Your Alarms
Another devices you might want to check before the cold season, when the heating is on are your smoke detectors and CO alarms. They can also run out of battery and the best time to check this is now.
Trim the Greenery
If you’re one of the lucky people to have a garden then there are at least a thousand and one tasks you need to do before the autumn officially arrives. But in the interest of your home maintenance, one of the most important tasks will be to trim and/or cut any shrubs, bushes and trees that might be getting too close to the house or any hanging cables. During thunderstorms trees can cause significant damage, if they haven’t been regularly trimmed.
