Finding a reputable plumber when there is a plumbing emergency in your home can be a challenging task. There is no time to shop around, ask the neighbours, and simply make sure you're choosing the right one.

Even if you're in a hurry to have your plumbing disaster fixed, there are still a few quick questions you can ask, and clues you can look out for, if you want to be sure you're making the right choice.

Here is how you can tell, if the plumbers you're planning to book are reputable:

Check their accreditation.

Having a quick look through their website? A reputable plumber will have certification logos on display such a TrustMark, Safe Contractor, Gas Safe or Water Safe. Trust Mark is a good one to look out for, as it is government-backed, and it means the plumber or company has covered certain code of practice, like health and safety procedures, and customer care. Trust Mark is also regularly checked, so you know it won't be just a sign form 10 years ago.

Ask if there is a guarantee on their work.

A reputable plumber will take pride in the quality of their work, and make sure the work is done right the first time. They won't be afraid to offer guarantee on their work, and rectify their mistake in the rare occasion they don't deliver the expected level of service.

Check the address and telephone number.

Whether you're calling a local or national company, a quick Google search will reveal if the company address and phone are genuine.

If your plumber is expected to do gas work, they'll need to be certified.

If the plumbing work you booked involves meddling with gas, the first thing you need to do, is ask your plumber to show you their Gas Safe certification. Only Gas Safe engineers are permitted to do work, where gas is involved.

They are clear about the costs.

What is the charge per hour, or half an hour? Is VAT included? Would you pay for materials or sundries separately? A reputable plumber will make their charges clear upfront, and give you the chance to decide if you can afford the service.

How long have they been in business?

It is absolutely fine to ask this question during the initial call. If the company has been in business for longer than 5 years, it's likely they're doing something right.

How many years of experience does the plumber have?

Another good question to ask. Even if you're calling an established plumbing company, it is not 100% certain that their plumbers will have years of experience. And the more experience the plumber, the more likely they are to have seen it (and fixed it) all before.

Are they insured?

Even if you're in an emergency, don't waste your precious minutes and keep asking questions. A reputable plumber or plumbing company will be insured up to a certain amount. Of course, no one wants to imagine the worst happening, but it's good to have the assurance you'll be covered.

Are there any other tips think of, that help you distinguish the good tradespeople in time of emergency? We'd love to hear about them in the comments.
